Volunteer Opportunities
Funding for our programs is limited. The African Community Center and African refugees therefore depend upon volunteers to carry out the work of bridging the gap between West Michigan and our new African neighbors. This may include mentoring for our One-On-One Literacy program, helping plan events, or writing grants for our programs’ sustainability. The many cultures of Africa offer some of the most interesting people to befriend and learn about. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to be part of an African neighbor’s integration into West Michigan.
We’d love for you to get involved. The following is a list of opportunities currently available at the ACC.
1. One-On-One Literacy
Pair with a local refugee to help with successful integration into West Michigan society. Together, the two of you may study English, learn public transportation, study for the GED, or talk about life in West Michigan. We don’t ask that you have specific experience in tutoring or teaching ESL, we just ask that you be committed to making life in West Michigan a friendly place for refugees. This is a great opportunity to gain cross-cultural understanding and learn about the transition from Africa to the United States.
2. Youth Outreach
Our youth program meets every other Saturday afternoon. We are always in need of planners, drivers, or people to come and participate. We usually talk about the current happenings, and then play a game or go to our community garden.
3. African Culture Celebration (Nov. 14, 2009)
We are searching for volunteers and interns to help us with our planning of our African Culture Celebration, to celebrate the many cultures of Africa and raise awareness about Africans in West Michigan. This will be a day of speakers, story telling, musical performances, dancing, and art exhibitions.
